The Austrian Alps have some of the best rivers in Europe with very reliable water levels throughout the summer. Live2Flow’s first visit was in 1996, my first European paddling trip (showing my age a bit there…), and then I returned in 2018 where it was great to be able to coach and guide others on rivers that I developed on. The trip isn’t limited to Austria as the location gives easy access to German and Swiss river sections too, a true multi country paddling trip…
Here is the lowdown:
Dates – NO FIRM DATES PLANNED FOR 2019 BUT POTENTIAL FOR RUNNING THIS TRIP 30 JUN – 6 JUL 19 – CONTACT ME IF YOU WANT THIS TO HAPPEN! Usual plan is for you to paddle Sunday to Saturday (7 days on the water). This allows full days of travel on Saturday before & the Sunday afterwards to get maximum value for a week off work!
Paddling – The minimum standard required to come on the trip is to be comfortable on Grade 3 rapids; Austria is fairly big volume paddling but there are plenty of less intimidating high quality Grade 3 sections. River choice will be tailored to the group; some sections will be planned in for the whole group (Grade 3/3+), some specifically for the more advanced paddlers to push themselves (Grade 3+/4) with the aim being to get everybody on the water for at least one section per day.
Accommodation – Camping in the sun!!! I will book a campsite close to Landeck, which puts us in the heart of the area, giving us easy access to the Upper Bavaria, Oetz, Landeck and Engadine paddling centres. Camping fees will be paid to the campsite directly.
Travel – Driving is the advised option as it is economic (with at least 3 in the vehicle) and allows you to bring your boat and kit. It is around 10hrs driving from Calais, plus travel UK side and ferry. Cost wise you need to factor in ferry charges, a few tolls and around 1800 miles of fuel usage. I would suggest a ferry early Saturday morning and full day drive to arrive that evening then reversing this on the return leg on Sunday.
Numbers – This trip needs a minimum of 4 paddlers to run. The maximum numbers will depend on balance of group ability & availabilty of leaders. We are staying in a campsite so accommodating non paddling friends or family just wanting a week in the sun is not a problem.
Cost – PRICE WOULD BE DEPENDENT ON DATES AND NUMBERS. To give an indication though, for 2018 the trip was £250 per person for guiding and coaching. This leaves camping, travel and food as additional costs.
